Belbin® Team Roles Profiling from Belbin® UK is one of the most powerful team profiling assessments in the world. The Team Roles that Dr. Meredith Belbin identified are used widely in thousands of organizations today. There are nine typical roles in a team as identified by Dr.Belbin:

  • Resource Investigator
  • Co-ordinator
  • Shaper
  • Monitor Evaluator
  • Teamworker
  • Implementer
  • Completer Finisher
  • Specialist


Each of us can play two or three Team Roles well, and should learn to adapt our behaviour to the needs of the of team’s objective.

The assessment is used to identify people’s behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. This information can be used to:

  • Build productive working relationships
  • Select and develop high-performing teams
  • Raise self-awareness and personal effectiveness
  • Build mutual trust and understanding
  • Aid recruitment processes


To find out which of the 9 Belbin Team Roles you have an affinity towards, and which ones you don’t, you need to start by completing a Belbin Self-Perception Inventory.

This is an online questionnaire that takes about 20 minutes to complete. A report is automatically generated and sent back to you online. On completion of the Self-Perception Inventory (SPI), a 6-page report is produced, based on an individual’s perception of their behavioural strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. You can add depth and context to your report by asking people who work with you to complete an Observer Assessment. This will help you see not only which roles you prefer, but which ones your colleagues see and value!

To understand the Team Role composition of an existing working team, a Belbin Team/Group Report can be produced. Once the members in a particular working team have completed their Self-Perception Inventory and Observer Assessments, all the data are collected and a Belbin Team/Group Report is generated. This report can help you to maximize both individual and team performance in the workplace.
